He is a right-arm medium-fast bowler and a right-handed batsman. Chahar is known for his ability to swing the new ball and has been a regular participant in limited-overs formats for India.

He has played domestic cricket for Rajasthan cricket team and in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for teams including Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

Deepak Chahar made his IPL debut in 2016 for Rising Pune Supergiant. He later became a key player for Chennai Super Kings, where he was primarily used as a powerplay bowler.
